Louise was only three-and-a-half when she came to the Ecology Unit. At the age of two, she had begun to complain of joint pain and had started to run an incessant fever. She had a rash. Studies by a local hospital led to a diagnosis of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Aspirin was prescribed and for over a year Louise was brought for weekly visits to the hospital to have her salicylate (aspirin) levels measured. She also was taken regularly to a famous Midwest clinic, but no demonstrable cause or effective treatment had been found for her condition. She had to be carried into the Ecology Unit.

On beginning the program, she was taken off her aspirinlike medicine. During the fast, Louise experienced a day of vomiting (withdrawal reactions), but after three days of fasting her joint pains completely subsided, and she began walking normally—something she had not done in over a year.

During the next eleven days, Louise was given twenty-six foods to test in their relatively uncontaminated forms. She had strong flare-ups of symptoms after eating carrots, eggs, and chicken, and somewhat less severe reactions to pork, cherry, corn, orange, grape, beef, apple, rice, cane, milk, cod, potato, and honey.

For example, eggs (one of her favorite foods) was followed, about two hours later, with the following reactions: the child said her legs were hurting, and when she was asked where, she pointed to her feet. When eating carrots, she at first reported that she loved them and was in a very happy mood. After 40 minutes, however, she asked for a pillow to sit on because her seat hurt. She soon had a “tummy ache” and loose bowel movement. After one hour, she reported that her knees hurt and pointed specifically to her left knee. She asked her mother, plaintively, “Why does my knee hurt?” Soon she was crying bitterly about the pain in both her knees and was holding her throat. (She had had a polyp removed from her throat the year before.)

Other foods gave no such reactions, however, and the child quickly recovered from these temporary food responses. Kelly left the hospital on her own two feet, completely off her previous medication, and with no pain. There was virtually no swelling in her joints. Since then she has occasionally had intermittent mild swelling in her knee, but without any pain. Her parents have done a good job of keeping incriminated foods out of her diet and of discovering other potential sources of reactions in the environment.

At the other extreme of the spectrum, the clinical ecology approach can also benefit those arthritic patients who are on in years or whose problems are longstanding.

Although indoor air pollution is the more serious source of reactions for the chemically susceptible, one should not minimize the danger of outdoor, or ambient, sources of pollution.

Outdoor air pollution is by its very nature variable and intermittent. That is, the intensity of the “smog” frequently depends on local weather conditions. In general, the worst spells of outdoor air pollution occur during stagnant, humid, foggy, or rainy days. This type of weather is apt to be more common in winter. Summer has its own problems, too, with more cars on the road giving off copious fumes from their overheated engines.

Chicago is a particularly good city in which to study this problem. As a storm approaches from the west, air pollution is swept into the city, from the industrial center in the south, by the counterclockwise winds swirling around a low pressure area. When the storm center passes through the city, the winds shift suddenly to the north and east, which clears the air of its major pollutants. Thus, both pollution and the lack of pollution are sharply accentuated by the geography of this area.

Chicago contains four major sources of outdoor air pollution. The greatest is the petroleum refinery area at the extreme northern border of Illinois and Indiana. The reader will recall Nora Barnes’ onset of sickness upon driving through the smog of this industrial zone. Some patients from Michigan prefer to take the ferry from Ludington to Milwaukee and then drive down to Chicago from the north, simply to avoid passing through the area.

The second major source of pollution comes from a refinery area adjoining the ship canal, southwest of Chicago. A third, more diffuse source centers around a paint manufacturing plant on the south side, which is located near several other foci of heavy industry.

The fourth area is the Loop, Chicago’s famous business district. Here automobile and railroad odors are major pollutants. Expressways and diesel railways radiate, spokelike, from the Loop, spewing chemical contamination into the environment.

Depending on the direction and force of the winds, pollutants from these four sources frequently mingle in a noxious cloud, and the contaminated blanket of air they have created is pushed now in one direction, now another. Hardly anyone can escape the influence of this smog, although the south side of the city usually suffers the most, and the lakeside “Gold Coast” the least.

Rhinitis has quite a lot in common with asthma – indeed the two conditions often go hand in hand, and patients who can avoid the allergens that trigger their asthmatic attacks tend to find that their rhinitis clears up as well. So the approach to dealing with rhinitis is much the same as that for asthma, described above. The same goes for associated conditions such as allergic sinusitis.

The first step should be an attempt to identify airborne allergens. Skin-prick tests are useful in pinpointing the inhalants that trigger rhinitis, but of little use for foods. Efforts to eliminate airborne allergens should continue for some months to allow a fair assessment of the effects. It is best to begin in the winter, because pollen and outdoor mould spores are at their lowest levels then – their presence may mask any good effects achieved by eliminating house dust or pets, and this can be very discouraging. If such clean-up measures do produce an improvement, continue them through the summer months to see if the symptoms recur.

At the end of this process, it should be clear if any airborne allergens are involved, and which ones they are. Where it is difficult to avoid such allergens, desensitization treatments may be worth considering.

If the symptoms persist despite all these measures, then an elimination diet could be used to assess the role of food. Where the rhinitis is fairly mild, using drugs to control it may be a more practical solution.

If after four or five weeks on the combined Anti-Candida/Anti-Allergy Program you are not showing steady improvements get your allergist to prescribe an oral desensitising vaccine. Make sure it has been made up specially for you and in accordance with test results. If it is a standard all-purpose vaccine, don’t use it. If you feel worse on the vaccine, try licking the end of the dropper rather than taking the full drop. After licking, squeeze out the drop and wash the end of the dropper. That way you are licking a fresh drop each day. Some people respond better to homeopathic medicines than vaccines. So consider consulting a homeopath. Take a list of your allergens with you.
On no account are they to be allowed into the bedroom.

Pets that sit on pillows, doonas or blankets always drop some hair and leave some dust mites. It’s no use having a dust mite cover to keep dust mites in if dust mites are sitting on top of the cover. Birds spread their dander when they flap their wings, so make sure they’re kept on the verandah or in the laundry for ninety days. Make sure somebody else sprays the animals. You are to avoid all sprays at all times.

Young Johnny’s history is very similar to Angela’s only he mucked up at school instead of home.

Despite sticking strictly to his program and seeing all his allergy and Candida symptoms disappear and despite being able to do his homework easily and willingly he just couldn’t settle down in class.

At first his parents, teacher and I thought it was an attention-seeking device as he still felt a bit neglected and inferior after years of being behind the other kids. We agreed that more individual tuition from his teacher would rectify this, yet to our shock and amazement it made him worse. The more attention she paid him the more hyperactive he seemed to become. Pencil throwing, hair pulling, teasing, incessant talking, fidgeting and backchat to the teacher increased. He just couldn’t concentrate, lost interest very easily and just didn’t seem to care.

On talking to him it was obvious he was interested in doing well at school and was genuinely sorry about upsetting his parents and teacher with his behaviour.

We eventually tracked the problem down to his teacher’s perfume. Each time she bent over to help him with his work he got a potent whiff of it which sent him off. Naturally the more attention she gave him the worse his behaviour became.

Removal of the perfume completely removed the problem. Johnny settled down and became a model pupil. No more disruption to the class and no more backchat to the teacher. Not only that, his schoolwork and exam results improved dramatically.

After five months of his teacher not wearing the perfume and with Johnny sticking to the combined Anti-Candida/Anti-Allergy Program, everyone’s happy. Johnny’s doing well at school and can handle limited exposure to the perfume his teacher is now able to wear two to three days a week. We have not experimented to see if Johnny can cope with any greater exposure for fear of resensitising him again.

Johnny suffered from acute allergic reactions to chemicals. It’s hard to say whether he would have remained acute reactors for the rest of his live or if he would have drifted into phase 2 of allergy addiction if he has not been treated at a young age.

My advice to anyone wishing to go on the anti-candida regime is to get your attitude right first. Even if it takes a month or two to get yourself appropriately attuned to the task ahead and your workloads down, so be it. Take whatever time is necessary, there’s no rush. Experience has taught me that if it takes much more than three months to get results you may become disheartened and find it difficult to stay on the program, believing that you’ll never get well. Results must be forthcoming early in the piece to keep enthusiasm up.

During this attitude attunement time it pays to be on the Metabolism-Balancing Program and taking a high dosage multivitamin and mineral supplement (containing the six essential minerals—calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc and manganese, plus hydrochloric acid to facilitate absorption). The metabolism-balancing effect of the diet and supplements will boost the vitality of your while blood cells and ensure quick results when you commence the Anti-Candida Program outlined in this book.

Do not embark on the program if there is a major social event such as Christmas, New Year or an anniversary looming. Wait until you get a clear three month run and forewarn your friends and family that for the next three months you cannot eat the prohibited foods at dinner parties.

Some major stresses cannot be avoided. If you are grieving over a loved one, going through a traumatic relationship break-up, or have been retrenched from work, do not attempt to go on the program until things are back to normal. You will not get the results you are looking for.

Don’t attempt the program if out of town visitors are coming to stay. Nothing interferes with the anti-candida regimen more than the demands of entertaining house guests. Don’t attempt the program while renovating the house. The dust, fumes, draughts and stresses that accompany renovations negate results. Wait until renovations are completed and you’re settled.

Because most people with candida yeast infections also have allergies and because the symptoms of these conditions are identical, I send all my Candida suspects for the full battery of allergy tests if after four to five weeks on the Anti-Candida Program they’re not showing significant improvement.

Having written a program which takes their food allergies into account I also exclude all sugars, white flour, alcohol and foods containing them. This includes fruit and milk products which contain natural sugars. The naturally occurring sugar in fruit (fructose) and in milk (lactose) arc capable of sustaining Candida albicans even though white sugar, white flour and alcohol have been removed from the diet. In most cases, however, fruit need only be removed from the diet for about four weeks and milk for about six to eight weeks (providing there is no allergy to it) while the killing effect of the anti-fungal treatment takes place.

Nystatin is the anti-fungal drug that I favour to kill off Candida plants. Used in combination with the program it is very effective; used on its own it is not nearly as effective. This is because

Candida, like all noxious weeds, is a hardy little plant. Like all weeds, it at first yields to the use of a herbicide but tends to grow back after the effects of this herbicide have worn off. The only way to kill a weed is to first spray it with a powerful herbicide and then starve it of the food it lives on. Candida is no different. By removing sugars, white flour and alcohol from the diet the plant becomes malnourished and very run down. In its weakened state the Nystatin (herbicide) is able to kill it off right down to its roots.

Nystatin is a very safe drug in so much as it is not absorbed from the digestive tract into the body. It passes through the digestive tract killing the yeast on contact. Its passage is on-going and it passes out of the bowel with each bowel movement. For this reason, it must be taken two to three times per day for at least three months and in a few cases for up to a year before the colony is successfully killed. Because it is not absorbed into the body proper and has fairly rapid passage through the digestive tract, Nystatin is an effective ‘pipe cleaner’ and does much to relieve even the most stubborn of constipation problems. Raw garlic is nearly as effective at killing off Candida colonies. It takes a little longer for results and most of my patients prefer not to use it because of the breath and body odour if leaves. Even the ‘odourless’ varieties, if used for about eight weeks or more, will give off a garlic odour from the body.

If, at any time, it becomes absolutely necessary to take antibiotics take them with Nystatin powder and Lactobacillus acidophilus to negate their detrimental effects on the body.

Allergy addiction is a curious phenomenon that affects many unsuspecting allergy sufferers. It differs from acute allergic reactions that manifest every time contact is made with a given substance, in that its symptoms manifest when contact is not made with the allergenic substance. And whereas the acutely allergic person feels better on withdrawing from contact with the allergenic substance, the allergy-addicted person feels worse. The complete process of allergy addiction passes through three distinct phases.

Phase 1

Known as the alarm phase, it is not unlike the normal acute allergic reaction every time they make contact with the substances (food, drink, chemical, grass, mould, etc.) that they are allergic to.

Phase 2

This is known as the adaptation phase. Here is where the difference begins. Instead of continuing to react allergically every time they make contact with the allergenic substance the body seems to get used to, or accepts, the substance and stops reacting to it. The body is now addicted to that substance and, in the true addictive way, only displays its symptoms if that food is withheld from it. The withdrawal symptoms of the adaptation phase are the same acute allergy symptoms of the alarm phase. The victims remain symptom free so long as they keep topping up with their specific allergenic (harmful) substance (most often foods, drinks,

By lowering the overall chemical load in this manner and by adhering to a nutritionally sound diet that includes supplementary vitamins and minerals, the immune system will settle down and allergy symptoms will begin to abate.

For some people the greatest source of chemical exposure is to the chemicals their own bodies can produce on a day-to-day basis. Acetaldehyde is a chemical that is closely related to formaldehyde. Acetaldehyde is the major waste product produced by a certain fungus called Candida albicans. Candida albicans lives in the intestines of many allergy sufferers. If our sensitivities to chemicals and the air, water and foods that contain them are to be overcome, any Candida albicans colonies in our gut must be thoroughly contained. Most victims know instinctively when to top up to prevent withdrawals and so go for years without experiencing any noticeable or worrisome symptoms.

Phase 3

This is known as the exhaustion phase. It develops progressively as the body’s adaptive capacity wanes. The time span varies from person to person and can take years—in some cases, many years. This can be a problem for the diagnosing physician as, over time, people tend to forget they ever experienced an alarm phase— especially if they did so as children.

The tiring body is no longer coping as well with the on-going allergenic contact and the victim has to resort to ever-increasing doses over shorter periods of time to keep the withdrawal symptoms at bay. And yet the symptoms continue to appear more and more often and last longer and longer. As time goes by and the powers of adaptation continue to run out, the victim spends more and more lime in the hangover zone as withdrawal symptoms follow closely behind each exposure. For the first time in memory the victim begins to feel noticeably ‘ill’.

The foodaholic is getting up to raid the fridge at night or has chocolate or biscuits beside the bed instead. The ‘cigaholic’ hoards cigarettes in case he or she runs out and the alcoholic is having a drink before breakfast to get rid of the headache he woke up with. By this time, if they’re perceptive enough, allergy addiction victims seek help but don’t usually get well as both they and the doctors believe this is the beginning of the disease and settle for treatment of the many different symptoms with drugs. It’s hard to convince these people that their melange of symptoms is the result of a lifetime’s eating of their favourite food or wearing their favourite perfume (or working in a given office).

Why some people remain acutely allergic all their lives and others become allergy addicted is hard to say. It is possible to have a strong constitution and genetic predisposition to allergy and it is generally felt that those with a stronger constitution (despite being genetically predisposed to allergy) are more inclined to develop allergy addictions. Strong cells are better able to adapt to toxins entering them than tired weaker (undernourished) cells. However, even strong constitutions have their limits, as evidenced when adaptation breaks clown.
Gastric upsets, in particular, disturb the natural balance of the gut and can exacerbate mild intolerance and allergy or bring on new intolerances. Take extra care after a gastric upset, if necessary going back to a strict diet for a while. Viruses, such as colds or flu, can also knock the system temporarily. Take extra care when you have a virus and afterwards; avoid food testing then, if possible.

Taking drugs, or having an operation, can also affect food sensitivity. Antibiotics, particularly, often affect the system.

Babies often develop temporary food intolerance when teething. Take extra care with diet at those times.

Overgrowth of Candida – candidiasis – can cause unexplained food reactions.

Finally, but not least important, emotional stress and worries can bring on, and exacerbate, food sensitivity. A sudden shock, a car accident, prolonged family or money worries, stresses at work – any kind of stress can affect your tolerance of food. Sometimes the effects can be delayed – the response to a bereavement, for instance, can take years to work through, and it is only in hindsight that you can see the connection. If you have stress or worries, even half-hidden, acknowledging their presence will help deal with food sensitivity.
Some doctors have found that people with Crohn’s disease respond well to treatment for food intolerance.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

This covers a range of minor disorders of the gut, characterised by abnormal bowel function. Although the disease is not serious, its effects can be distressing and debilitating. Some people with IBS suffer mild diarrhoea, with gut pain and occasional constipation. Others suffer constipation frequently, with bloating and wind, and occasionally have diarrhoea. The symptoms often start after an intestinal infection. They rarely affect general health, and do not get worse or produce other symptoms as time goes by.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

This is a disease in which the joints and the surrounding tissues become inflamed and painful. It usually manifests itself first in the small joints of the hand, and is gradual in onset. The joints are painful, red, swollen and warm to the touch. Symptoms are usually worse in the morning. The normal course of the disease is to spread slowly to other joints, reaching the larger ones, such as the hip or shoulder, last of all. The joints become fixed and more swollen over time with wasting of the muscles and show characteristic changes under X-ray. The diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis is confirmed by specific blood tests. Some people with rheumatoid arthritis respond to treatment for food intolerance.
