Louis Kuhne had an astute mind and understanding of natural healing and was able to use water most effectively for what is called ’stimulation’ or ‘irritation’ therapy. He perfected his method to such an extent that his handbook came to be translated into many languages, circulating in all parts of the earth. Unfortunately, he had no direct successor and no society or clinic took up his ideas with a view to spreading the Kuhne method, as was the case with the cures developed by Priessnitz, Sebastian Kneipp and other hydrotherapists.

Especially valuable and important is a cold water massage Kuhne developed. A simplified form of this treatment can be undertaken in your own home. First, take a large container and fill it three-quarters full with cold water. Then put a board over the container to cover half of it. Sit on the board, having taken off the clothes covering the lower part of the body. Take a brush with a long handle, wrap a cloth around the brush, dip it in the cold water and rub round about the genitals. The cold reaction must only affect one part of the body and for this reason your hand should not be put in the cold water but remain dry all the time. Because of the cold reaction it is essential to maintain a constant body temperature by wrapping yourself in warm cloths or towels during the treatment, as is done during a steam bath.

Salt is a remedy for many ailments, but not in the form in which it is usually ingested. Bathing in sea water is recommended for glandular disturbances, which so often result in obesity. The thyroid also benefits from sea-bathing, and anyone who suffers from goitre or similar thyroid problems (hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism) will obtain good results from it too. If you live in a landlocked area and do not have access to the sea, you can use dry or moist salt packs at home to draw away water from the tissues. For this reason, anyone suffering from oedema, swellings of a dropsical nature, will find salt packs an answer to his problem.

Gargling with salt water is an excellent substitute for the more expensive antiseptics and herbal mouthwashes sold over-the-counter – the effect is just as good.

In cases of catarrh or inflammation of the mucosa, tepid salt water should be sniffed up the nostrils, which should then be rinsed with clear water. This simple treatment, when practised regularly, will reduce any susceptibility to respiratory ailments, that is, catarrh and sore throats. Naturally, if you do live by the sea, it would be better to use sea water, provided that it is uncontami-nated. Use cooking salt instead, if that is all you have available.

This is a marvellous remedy for whooping cough and when combined with Drosera (sundew) its effect is astonishingly fast. Coccus cacti (cochineal) is one of the ingredients in Thydroca, the reliable whooping cough drops. If these drops are used at once, possibly prior to the onset of the characteristic symptoms, as a prophylactic, the whoop may be aborted.

It is strange that Drosera is a carnivorous plant and Coccus cacti itself has little to do with plants. To obtain the raw material for this whooping cough remedy one must travel far: to Algeria, the Canary Islands, or to Central America where cactus plants abound in desert areas and stony wastelands. The search goes on to locate a genus of cactus called Opuntia coccinellifera and on it one will find a small insect about 3 mm long, which feeds on the juicy flesh of its host. The insect has a broad shell and leaves behind a red stain when it is squashed on a piece of white paper. Do not be shocked to learn that this is the female cochineal insect, the raw material for the wonderful homoeopathic whooping cough remedy called Coccus cacti.

The resulting oat drink is a wonderful tonic which, if taken regularly over a period of time, will calm and regenerate the nervous system, giving it new energy. Its use is also recommended for diabetics.

Even after the oats have been harvested the straw can be used to make an infusion, although it is not as potent as the juice from the green oats. Still, it will be found quite effective in cases of catarrh, coughs and febrile conditions. A decoction of oat straw added to the bath water is especially good for children whose skin function needs stimulating.

There are still other uses for oats, for even the grains make an excellent tea. If you cannot find gleanings in the field, use the oat grain together with the husk, as fed to horses. Sweeten the tea as you would the oat drink described above. It has a tonic effect, and if taken when the mucous membranes of the stomach or intestines are inflamed, it is a superb soothing remedy.

Homoeopathy employs the freshly pressed juice from the green oats for its outstanding nerve remedy Avena sativa, which is the Latin name for the oat plant.
